A ceremony of signing the European Road Safety Charter was held under the aegis of Minister Tsvetkov 22.02.2011

The ceremony and signing event took place at the Grand Hotel Sofia under the aegis of Minister Tsvetkov. The event was organized by the European Commission with the support of the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications of the Republic of Bulgaria. 27 new companies and organizations signed the Charter. Thereby they agreed to contribute for the improvement of the road safety in our country.

During the event Minister Aleksandar Tsvetkov said that in the last year and a half through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications and others institutions, NGOs and companies, the number of deaths perished had decreased vastly – on the average 1000 people per year to 775 for the last year. In such a way the number of the victims returned to the levels in 1965 when the number of the automobiles was six times less. Minister Tsvetkov said that some of the campaigns that the ministry held in the last year such as check up of brake fluid, the free telephone for victims of accidents, inspection of the tires were organized with the active participation of companies and organizations. We will continue to work together to create appropriate conditions for permanent resolving of the problem. Our common European goal and task is to reduce doubly the number of the victims of road accidents and to create safe and secure conditions on the road said in conclusion Minister Aleksandar Tsvetkov.

The European Road Safety Charter was created in 2004 by the European Commission with the declared purpose to support any kind of initiatives that will be carried out in order to contribute to the EC objective: to halve the number of fatalities on European roads. The Charter unify companies, state power and civil society. By January 2011, more than 2 000 stakeholders have signed the charter and committed to undertake actions providing a concrete response to road safety problems they encounter in their daily work and lives.
