Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications

By decision of the Council of Ministers the operation, management and maintenance duties for Balchik Airport Complex will be assigned to Sofia Airport. Sofia Airport, which is under the authority of Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communication has enough experience in management. This will allow the airport to start taking civil aircraft very soon. Currently airfields near the seaside remain inactive millitary airport. The change in designation improves air services on the Bulgarian Black sea Coast.

The Airport is located 800m east of Levski district in Balchik, covering an area of 460 hectares. The runway’s dimensions are 2500 by 60 m. There is a possibility for expanding the airport to 3500 m in north direction.

Expectations are that the airport will cover 1/3 of the flights to Varna. This will significantly ease the transport situation in the city, especially during the summer, as the central stream of buses and cars heading towards the resort in the north currently runs all over town.

Balchik Airport is expected to serve tourists traveling by air for their vacation in resorts at the North Black Sea Coast such as Albena, Balchik, Kranevo, Kavarna and others.
