Port Varna reported record growth for handled cargo 04.10.2011

Only for September Port Varna handled 1.065 million tons of cargoes. This is an absolute record in the history of the biggest Bulgarian port. The previous record, which was also placed this year, was in August, when for the first time the port reached 1 million tons of handled cargoes for a month.
In January-September 2011, the freight traffic at Port Varna reached 6 665 600 metric tons, which is 12% growth compared to the same period of last year, 35% growth compared to the same period of 2009 and 10% compared to January – September 2008. Net profit for the first nine months was 3.5 million levs. Growth was reported in all structural loads - grain, containers, soda ash, coal, fertilizers, cement, phosphate, scrap, etc..

Grain exporting is an extremely successful. So far, 1 513 793 tons of grain have been exported (growth of 12%), only for September the treated amount is 370 000 tons more. The most common destinations for exports of grain are Spain, Italy, Portugal, Holland, Belgium and Greece. Although less frequently, Bulgarian grains are exported to some Arab countries - Syria, Egypt and Algeria.

The overall assessment indicates that the container has also increased with 5%. For  the first 9 months of the year are generally handled 91,000 TEU (container units), but still can not replicate the results of the peak year for the world economy – 2008. Another positive trend is increasing the amount of full containers with 21.3%.

"Port of Varna" EAD expects 2011 to be one of the most successful years for the company. It is expected by that year to be handled over 8.5 million tones of cargoes, of which 130,000 (TEU) containers and net profit of EUR 4 million for the company.

According to expert evaluations and achieved results, Port Varna showed that through good management and appropriate investments, it has a chance to become one of the most important logistic centers in the Black Sea region.
