Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Ivaylo Moskovski officially opened the new airport tower of the Bulgarian Air Traffic Services Authority (BULATSA) at the Sofia airport.

The president of Gavbolgarstroy Kalin Peshov gave a symbolic key of the new tower to Diyan Dinev, the Director General of BULATSA. The event was attended by and representatives of the government,  executive members, representatives of the aviation industry and others.

This control tower is the newest transport project that had been finished, said minister Moskovski during the event. According to him it will assure save and effective operation of flights in next 40 years. There is even an option to manage second runway in the future, the minister added. He said that all operational systems and facilities are redundant to ensure continuous and safe operation of flights.

Minister Ivailo Moskovski said that the need for construction of new control tower is connected with the reconstruction and development of the airport complex. On the other hand through the new airport control tower BULATSA will provide improved quality and efficiency of air navigation services in the area of ​​the airport, he added.

The Bulgarian Air Traffic Services Authority (BULATSA) and construction company Glavbolgarstroy have signed a contract for the preliminary design and construction of a new control tower at Sofia Airport. The air traffic control tower is 50 meters high and was built near Terminal 2 so that the two units suit each other in terms of architecture. The height and the location of the tower have been selected so as to ensure that the airport will remain functional for at least 40 years, the site is prepared for the introduction of cutting-edge technologies.

The new air traffic control tower  will be put into operations right after its official opening on Wednesday taking over the duties of the airport older tower at Terminal 1.
