The President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rosen Plevneliev and the caretaker Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Kristian Krastev started the construction of the expansion of the Metro from Mladost 1 Residential District to Business Park in Mladost 4. The ceremony was attended by Interim Deputy Prime Minister in charge of EU funds Iliana Tsanova, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova, the executive director of "Metropolitan" Ltd Stoyan Bratoev and others.

“This project will not be only connection from Mladost 1 to Mladost 4, but it will provide a fast connection with one of the most developed educational and technological centers in Sofia”, said Minister Kriatian Krastev. According to him the subway can be used by thousands of people who daily commute to their jobs in the business park or to some of the most prestigious schools in the area, such as the American College and the Police Academy. In addition to this, Minister Krastev said that, in 2015, the capital will have nearly 8 km and 7 new subway stations and it will also provide a quick access to Sofia Airport.

The President of the Republic of Bulgaria noted that the project for the expansion of the subway in the capital is a successful example of both the Bulgarian and European level.

The first two phases of the project for the expansion of the subway with a total length of 13.5 km with 13 new stations was completed in 2012 with funds from the Operational Programme "Transport". In November 2012 started the construction of Lot 1 of Stage III of the project, including the line "Boul. Tsarigradsko shose – Druzhba Residential District - Sofia Airport" - 5 km and 4 stations, with deadline for completion - April 2015.  

Today starts the construction of Lot 2 of Stage III - "Mladost I Residential District - Business Park in Mladost IV Residental District”. The length of the section is 2.7 km with 3 metro stations. The deadline for completion of the section and the stage is the end of April 2015. The entire route is underground. The total funding for the section from Mladost 1 to Mladost 4 amounts to over BGN 85 mln.
