Large size

Bulgaria, the Vatican City, the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic have, simultaneously, issued a new post stamp on the occasion of the 1150th anniversary of Saint Cyril and Methodius’ Moravian mission.

The postal-philatelic publication that will be distributed in Bulgarian post offices was validated earlier today by the Executive Director of "Bulgarian Post" Liudmil Alexandrov, Papal Nuncio Archbishop Janusz Bolonek, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic Marian Yakubotsi and the Ambassador of the Czech Republic Pavel Vacek.

The publication includes a block with the mark, an illustrated envelope and a special stamp. The nominal value of the postmark is 3.20 Levs, and there are 40 000 copies in circulation while the pictorial envelop has a print run of 1389 copies.

The artist-corrugator behind the edition is Kristiana Borisova. Both the stamp and the envelope were designed on the basis of projects submitted by the postal administration of Slovakia and the Czech Republic. They were based on two medieval frescoes found in the Basilica of "St. Clemente "in Rome.

The Moravian mission is the third most important undertaking in the Thessalonican educators’ life work. During the autumn of 863, the creators of the Cyrillic alphabet arrived in Velingrad, the capital at the time of the Great Moravian Prince Rostislav. At the prince’s request, they were sent to the Byzantine Emperor Michael III, to preach Christianity in the Slavic language.
