The Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications hosted a roundtable on the development of intermodal transport in Bulgaria today. The COSMOS project was presented - http://www.intermodal-cosmos.eu/content/index_eng.html. The project activities are financed by the European Commission under the Marco Polo programme, which helps businesses adopt transport modal shift from road to more environmentally friendly modes of transport.

It was stressed out that the intermodal transport is a priority in efforts of MTITC on the development of the transport sector. The administration has the commitment to create an enabling environment for the effective operation of intermodal transport chains as the leading factor in this process is the quality of the infrastructure. Bulgaria is located at the crossroads of active transport corridors that create conditions for attracting freight and passenger traffic. There are ten intermodal points identified as crucial for the development of the European network - Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Ruse, Lom, Vidin, Dragoman, Svilengrad and Gorna Oryahovitsa. Over the coming years there will be a gradual development of modern terminals, which together with the modernization of road and rail infrastructure, will create a modern transport system.

The meeting was attended by the representative of the European Commission Dr. Gerhard Troche, experts from MTITC and the parties to the COSMOS project, as well as representatives of the transport business.
