Bulgaria Joins the European Maritime Information Network

10.12.2009
Today, the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications, Aleksandar Tsvetkov inspected the recently introduced information system SafeSeaNet. The Deputy Minister Kamen Kitchev, Sergey Tzarnakliyski, Executive Director of EA "Maritime Administration" and representatives of the executor company "TehcnoLogika" were present during the official release of the system in the city of Varna.

The purpose of the SafeSeaNet project is to improve the communication and data exchange between the Member States of the European Union about ships with dangerous freight. The Bulgarian system is developed by EA "Maritime Administration", certified by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and released for use in November 2009. With this, our country has become part of the European Information Network which abides by all the requirements in the directives of the European Union.

The main objectives of the SafeSeaNet project are to improve: the possibility for finding accidents potentially dangerous for the maritime safety and environment; the organization, contributing to preventing accidents at sea and marine pollution; the control over the maritime vessels in the ports; the effectiveness of the port logistics; the collection of statistical data and information for the purposes of the EMSA, the Member States, etc.

With the creation and development of the national SafeSeaNet server, the Republic of Bulgaria participates effectively in the EMSA's project. The system sends messages based on the data entered by an operator or received from other systems. It also allows for the opportunity to send inquiries to the European Index Server (EIS) and replies to inquiries coming from it. For this communication, there is a data base for all the sent and received messages. Its subsystem, HAZMAT allows for the archiving and organization of the documents received about dangerous freights with the purpose of sending them to EU SSN if required.

From 9.12 to 11.12. 2009, the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Aleksandar Tsvetkov was on an official visit to the cities of Varna and Bourgas. During this time, he visited the airports and ports in the region and familiarized himself with the conditions and development perspectives of each one.
