Bulgaria"s Cyrillic Internet Domain Name Request was Turned Down
19.05.2010
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has turned down Bulgaria's proposal for the domain name “бг” in Cyrillic. The reason given by the independent expert is the similarity with existing domains in Latin characters. Despite the wide social support in Bulgaria for the “бг” domain name as the most liked combination of letters in Cyrillic, during the evaluation process Internet was considered as a world resource and the uniqueness in it is the most important thing.
In the end of 2009 the Ministry of Transport, Information Technologies and Communications launched a survey for the name of the internet domain in Cyrillic. Despite the condition alternative names to “бг” to be proposed because those symbols might not be accepted by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, one third of the voters have chosen exactly that combination. One fourth of the voters have chosen the symbols “бгр”.
MTITC is to launch a new survey among Bulgarians to find the best alternative domain name that Bulgaria can offer.
