MTITC Published a Poll for the New Name of the National Domain in Cyrillic
21.07.2010
The new poll for a name of the national domain in Cyrillic has been published on the official site of the Ministry of Transport, Information Technology and Communications http://mtitc.government.bg/.
MTITC is looking for public’s opinion about the refusal of the name “бг” and the new versions of the Bulgarian domain name: „бгр", българия", „бъл" и „бя".
The new poll is necessary after the refusal of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to accept Bulgaria's proposal for a domain name in Cyrillic with a "бг" suffix. The reason given by the independent expert is the similarity with existing two-letter domains in Latin characters. Despite the wide social support in Bulgaria for the “бг” domain name as the most liked combination of letters in Cyrillic, during the evaluation process Internet was considered as a world resource and the uniqueness in it is the most important thing.
Despite the refusal, MTITC is ready to explore every avenue and propose again the name “бг” if the poll confirms that this is the only acceptable choice for the Bulgarian society.
The procedure for registering internet addresses with alphabets different than Latin was officially launched on November 16, 2009.
