An Information Service Conference was held in Rousse

05.11.2010

On 3 and 4 November in Rousse was held the 9th Danube Information Service Conference. The event was organized by the Executive Agency "Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River" and it was attended by representatives of a number of Bulgarian and international organizations working in the field of inland waterway transport. The conference is an annual information event of the GIS Forum Danube, which for the last two years is organized within the project NEWADA (Network of Danube Waterway Administrations).

The forum was opened by the Governor of Rousse Plamen Stoilov, who stressed the importance of the conference to enhance safety of navigation on the Danube. As a representative of the state he confirmed that the Republic of Bulgaria fully supports the efforts of the European Commission to make the inland waterways an attractive kind of transport with great prospects for future development. In the context of European policy for the utilization of spare capacity on inland waterways, the development of the Danube River as a European transport axis has emerged as one of the priorities in national policy.

The focus of the conference was the project NEWADA. Leaders of individual work packages gave an overview of this condition, achieved results and upcoming project activities.

Within the first day were presented the reports of Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany and the Czech Republic for the current state of activities on the development of electronic navigational charts for inland navigation, data exchange, river systems, research and technologies and software solutions in this area. Representatives of the Danube Commission and the Commission for the Sava River Basin also presented their reports.

During the second day of the conference were presented projects WANDA, IRIS EU II, NELI, BULRIS, CBRIS II HR-HU, and implementation of RIS in Serbia. Participants in DISC'10 had the opportunity to become familiar with the technologies and software solutions to various organizations and companies working in this field.

At the end of the forum was concluded that getting familiar with these activities in each country, with the projects that are completed and those planned, as well as the decisions that individual organizations and companies offer, is a good basis for the realization of the future activities of all stakeholders in this area. It will thus be achieved their common goal - the transformation of inland waterways in a safe, economically efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transportation.
