Airport operators support introduction of anti-drone systems

All international airports in Bulgaria should be equipped with anti-drone systems. This was agreed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadzhov and the representatives of the airports in Sofia, Varna, Burgas, Plovdiv, Gorna Oryahovitsa, BULATSA and DG CAA. Different technological options will be explored within a reasonable timeframe, which will be efficient but will not have a negative impact on the existing airport systems.

“Together with the experts of BULATSA and DG CAA, we need to find an appropriate technology that is within reasonable economic limits and takes into account the specificities of each airport. The solutions should be included in the investment plans of the companies,” Grozdan Karadzhov stressed.

Such measures are rare at European airports and there is no ready-made model that can be implemented immediately, but airport operator companies have already taken action to study foreign experiences. They have assured that urgent measures have been taken to monitor airport areas, with special attention being paid to the take-off and landing of aircraft.

The Deputy Prime Minister promised that the necessary legislative changes will be quickly prepared. “The study that we have done shows that the regulations related to the use of drones, controls and penalties need to be improved. Regulations and protocols should be developed to deal with the unauthorised use of such aircraft,” Karadzhov was adamant.

At the request of Deputy Prime Minister Grozdan Karadzhov, an expert meeting will be held tomorrow to outline an action plan, and the report with its results should be ready by Friday.
