Almost 320 km of 4 motorways have been built with funds from the Operational Programmes Transport and Transport and Transport Infrastructure. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Dimitar Nedyalkov at the ceremony for the start of the construction of the motorway ‘Ruse — Veliko Tarnovo’. In total, over BGN 2.5 billion have been allocated for road projects under the two programmes.
The construction of the Ruse — Veliko Tarnovo motorway is included in the Transport Connectivity Programme 2021 — 2027.
‘The development of the North-South transport route is of strategic importance not only for Bulgaria but also for Europe. This is an important alternative route between the countries of North-Eastern Europe via Romania and Bulgaria with Greece and Turkey, as well as between the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean,’ the Deputy Minister said. In his words, an important step is the Ruse — Veliko Tarnovo motorway to be connected with the future second bridge in the Ruse — Giurgiu region.
The construction of the route will improve transport services for international and domestic traffic, increase traffic safety and move transit traffic out of the settlements. Nationally, the construction and commissioning of the motorway will support the development of Northern Bulgaria.
The start of the construction was given by Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov, Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Andrey Tsekov, Vice-President of the National Assembly Rositsa Kirova, regional governors and mayors from the region.
