Bulgaria and Georgia will now recognise each other's certificates for coastal navigation after an agreement was signed today in Sofia between the Executive Agency ‘Maritime Administration’ and the Maritime Transport Agency of Georgia. This took place in the framework of a visit of a Georgian delegation led by Guram Guramishvili, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development.
‘Both countries have new opportunities to develop sustainable multimodal transport connectivity between Asia and Europe.’ This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Anna Natova during the talks between the two delegations. She recalled that ferry lines connect the Bulgarian ports of Burgas and Varna with the Georgian ports of Poti and Batumi, but new prospects for increasing cargo turnover should be sought. The new geopolitical situation in Europe also poses new challenges for the Black Sea countries and in particular for the development of ferry traffic, she added.
Deputy Minister Natova presented the ports of Burgas and Varna as modern terminals that have the capacity to increase container traffic between the two countries.
Deputy Minister Guramishvili expressed the support of the Georgian side for the development of the ferry connections. He added that another sector where cooperation could be expanded is rail transport. The two delegations agreed that the preparation of a memorandum of cooperation between the railway administrations of the two countries could begin.
