The security of next-generation mobile networks is a priority in today's economies, which are increasingly influenced by the digital world. The Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Andreana Atanasova stated this during an international high-level online conference dedicated to national security and cyber security.
According to the European Cyber Security Strategy, which was presented in December 2020, more than 25 billion devices will be connected to the mobile networks by 2025, added the Deputy Minister. According to her, the huge market for connected devices opens up risks and their prevention determines many aspects of cybersecurity policy.
Andreana Atanasova recalled the recommendations of the European Commission to take a risk-based approach to the suppliers of network equipment. "The guidelines provide objective criteria that can be used to assess critical and sensitive network components. Not only the governments, but also the participants in the mobile communications market must be involved in the co-operation on these issues," added she.
Deputy Minister Atanasova pointed out that the Bulgarian national policy on the fifth-generation technologies reflects the European efforts to establish a coordinated approach. As an example, she cited the recently adopted amendments to the Electronic Communications Act, which strengthen the powers of the national regulator in setting security requirements for electronic communications networks.
An essential element for the security of the fifth generation networks is the creation of a scheme for certification of network components and processes, concluded the Deputy Minister.
