Bulgaria plays a crucial role in the connectivity of several regions. Our country is a crossroads between the Balkan Peninsula, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Anna Natova at a meeting today with Matthew Boyce, former US Assistant Secretary of State and Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute, Washington, and Chairman of the Sofia Security Forum Yordan Bozhilov.
"The relations between Bulgaria and the Black Sea countries in the field of transport are important not only for the trade corridors between Europe and Asia, but also for the reconstruction process in Ukraine," Deputy Minister Natova said. She stressed that of paramount importance for the Bulgarian side is the construction of a third bridge over the river. Danube at Ruse-Giurgiu. Preparations are at the feasibility study stage, which is being funded with EU funds.
"In order to ease the traffic on the North-South route, it is extremely important to resume the ferry line at Ruse-Giurgiu", Anna Natova was adamant. She explained that 3,500 trucks a day pass through that section. With the Danube Bridge at Ruse to be repaired very soon, traffic is expected to be seriously hampered. "The Bulgarian side is fully prepared to resume ferry services, an operator has been chosen and we are counting on the Romanian side to take the necessary actions," Anna Natova explained.
An important part of the strategic infrastructure in the North-South direction is also the railway link between the Kulata/Promahon and Thessaloniki railway crossing. "We expect that there will be a development of the modernisation of this section on Greek territory," Deputy Minister Natova said.
