The implementation of a result-oriented and sustainable policy is the basis for building a financially stable, efficient and safe rail system. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Velik Zanchev at the opening of a round table in Brussels on "Financing rail transport in the Multiannual Financial Framework post 2020". This is the first official event in the transport sector of the calendar of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Deputy Minister Zanchev acquainted the participants with the results achieved in recent years regarding the modernization of the railway network with European and national funding. He expressed a clear position on the importance that the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) projects remain among the main priorities of Member States for infrastructure development after 2020.
"The development of railway transport is only possible by providing sustainable financing for the sector with clear and measurable results," said also Deputy Minister Zanchev.
It is essential for Bulgaria to continue to use grants for the implementation of TEN-T physical infrastructure modernization projects. Another important task for network expansion is building land connections to the countries of the Western Balkans that will improve transport connectivity in Southeastern Europe, added Velik Zanchev.
Among the participants in the forum were the European Commissioner for Transport Violeta Bulc, the Executive Director of The Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER) Libor Lochman, UNIFE Director General Philippe Citroën, the head of the managing authority of the Transport and Transport Infrastructure Operational Program Galina Vassileva, representatives of the European Commission and the European Parliament, as well as experts.
