Deputy Prime Minister Grozdan Karadzhov: Investments in green energy ensure sustainable development of the economy

Investments in renewable energy sources are one of the examples of how technological changes are used for sustainable development. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadzhov at an event to present upcoming projects of United Group, which produces electricity from solar and wind energy. The company is also the owner of telecommunications operator Vivacom.

‘The share of green energy in the European Union's total energy mix has tripled in the last 20 years. Bulgaria is following this trend, but the share of renewables is still less than a quarter of final energy consumption. Investments in this area are therefore important for the sustainable development of the Bulgarian economy,’ the Deputy Prime Minister added.

He reminded that in the last 15 years Vivacom has created opportunities for high-speed digitalization and modernization of more than 130 municipalities in Bulgaria. ‘We expect telecom operators to apply with project proposals in the open procedure for building digital networks for remote and sparsely populated areas in the country. Almost BGN 470 million have been provided by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan for the implementation of the project, and the deadline for submitting proposals is early April,’ Grozdan Karadzhov said.

The minister added that Vivacom is involved in two other important projects with EU funding. One is for 5G infrastructure for telemedicine in 34 remote settlements in Burgas region. The other investment is to provide uninterrupted 5G coverage for connected and automated mobility along the Orient/East Mediterranean corridor in the route between Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey.
