The launch of high-speed trains between Sofia and Istanbul is a priority that will be realised with the progress in the modernisation of the railway infrastructure in Bulgaria and Turkey. This was the common opinion at a meeting of the Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Gvozdeykov and the new Ambassador of Turkey to Bulgaria H. E. Mr Mehmet Sait Uyanik Minister Gvozdeykov pointed out that the Plovdiv—Edirne railway route will be able to start first, as the modernization in the Bulgarian section is the most advanced.
Georgi Gvozdeykov and Sait Uyanik stressed that the work on the second railway border crossing between Bulgaria and Turkey on the line Yambol—Lesovo—Turkish border should be accelerated. Its functioning can seriously relieve the traffic through the existing railway crossing Svilengrad—Kapakule.
The two discussed air connectivity between Bulgaria and Turkey, as well as the opportunities for opening new routes. ‘We expect Bulgaria to be admitted to Schengen soon and by land, which will also relieve the Turkish side, as cargo will pass faster through Bulgaria to Europe’, the Bulgarian transport minister said.
During the talks, the two sides declared that bilateral cooperation will be built upon, using the full potential of all modes of transport.
