The “Sofia - European Capital of Sport” postage stamp was validated today by Deputy Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Dimitar Genovski, the Mayor of Sofia Yordanka Fandakova and the President of the Sofia municipal council Elen Gerdjikov. The event took place at the Regional Museum of History in Sofia in the presence of the Executive Director of "Bulgarian Posts" EAD Deyan Duneshki, famous names in Bulgarian sports, media and philatelists.
Sofia is also declared the European capital of sports for the year of the first Presidency of the Council of the European Union. These two events enable our country to declare its important role not only as a member of the Union, but also as a center for the promotion of European values, Deputy Minister Genovski said before the validation.
We have before us today the latest postal-philatelic edition dedicated to the announcement of Sofia as the European capital of sport. Both sport and postage stamps connect people, create a sense of cohesion and convey messages on the culture and values of peoples. The sports theme is present in the Bulgarian postage stamp issuing since the 1930s and since then it has been one of the most popular themes among Bulgarian philatelists.
The postage stamp is in circulation of 11 00 pieces and Valentin Shtinkov is the project artist. I believe that it will attract the attention not only of the collectors but also of the people who send letters to their friends and business partners, both with the themes and with the symbols depicted, Dimitar Genovski said.
