First modernised German wagons go to sea this weekend

The second batch of 19 more wagons will be in Bulgaria within days

In a very short period, we were able to start the renewal of rolling stock in rail transport. This was stated by the Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Gvozdeykov during the presentation of the first composition of the modernized wagons, which were bought from Germany.

‘These are the first steps to catch up with the development of rail transport. We made this deal with the help of the German Embassy and Ambassador Irene Maria Plank’, the minister added.

The first train with the German carriages will depart tomorrow from Sofia to Burgas, passing along the Sub-Balkan line and reaching the seaside city in less than 6 hours. The rolling stock is equipped with air conditioning systems and sockets for charging mobile devices. The next 19 wagons will be in the country within days, and a Bulgarian team is currently in Germany to coordinate the delivery of the 10 extra wagons.

‘We're doing our best. With the steps we took already in the middle of last year, we managed to show the Bulgarian society that we have the motivation and the desire for Bulgaria to have modern rail transport in the near future’, said Georgi Gvozdeykov.

The Minister recalled that a few months ago a contract was signed for the delivery of 10 more new locomotives, and the procedures for the delivery of new trains will give a whole new vision to this type of service. ‘I hope we will be able to negotiate all the funds under the Recovery and Sustainability Plan and have renewed rolling stock by 2026’, he said.
