The Varna ferry complex will become a key point for equipment and cargo to Ukraine in its reconstruction process. This was stated by Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Gvozdeykov during a visit to the complex today.
"The ferry complex is the only transport facility in the European Union that allows transport by wagons, such as those used in Ukraine, without transshipment. Due to a systematic lack of investment, the facility has been brought to a state where much of it is unusable," the transport minister added. He explained that for this reason, in June, a rapid organization was created and a large-scale repair program worth BGN 13 million, provided by State Enterprise "Port Infrastructure", was launched. Currently, 4 public procurement procedures are underway and the contracts are expected to be concluded by the end of the year. These include the renovation of the complex's external car park, internal road network, and the most important buildings in the complex.
"It is important to note that such investments in the Varna Ferry Complex have not been made since it was built," said Georgi Gvozdeykov. Minister Gvozdeykov also commented that the war in Ukraine has seriously changed the transport flows and logistics chains, which requires accelerated work on the Sea2Sea multimodal corridor, connecting the Aegean Sea with the Black Sea, as an alternative to the Black Sea transport links.
