The helicopter will reach the Zheleznitsa tunnel from Sofia in 30 minutes
The Civil Aviation Authority has registered the eighth heliport for the country's air ambulance service. It is located next to the Zheleznitsa tunnel of Struma Motorway.
The construction of the facility provides the possibility of rapid evacuation of victims of road accidents or other emergency situations in the tunnel section as well as in the whole region. According to the aviation operator Bulgaria Heli Med Service EAD, after receiving a signal, the helicopter will reach the Zheleznitsa tunnel from Sofia in 30 minutes.
Until now Bulgaria had three hospital heliports in Sofia and one each in Varna, Panagyurishte, Ruse and Veliko Tarnovo. ‘Struma’ is the first highway in Bulgaria to have a helipad. The heliport was built within the framework of the project for the construction of Struma Motorway — Lot 3.1, Lot 3.3 and Zheleznitsa Tunnel, which is financed by OP Transport and Transport Infrastructure. The contracting authority of the project is the Road Infrastructure Agency.
