The largest Bulgarian airport is now named after the Apostle of Freedom - Vasil Levski

Within 6 months the name of Sofia Airport will be reflected in international aviation registers

Sofia Airport is now named after the Apostle of Freedom - Vasil Levski. This is a tribute to the past, but also a look to the future. I believe that in the coming years we will continue to develop Vasil Levski Airport - Sofia in a way that meets the high modern standards. This is what Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadzhov said during the naming ceremony of Sofia Airport with the name of Vasil Levski Airport - Sofia.

The Deputy Prime Minister recalled the words of Vasil Levski, with which the Apostle pointed the way to the integration of Bulgarians in Europe: “It is up to us to be equal with other European nations. Our precious homeland will need worthy people to lead it on the path of prosperity so that we can be equal to other European nations.”

Regarding the procedures for naming the capital's airport, Grozdan Karadzhov explained that immediately after the issuance of the Presidential Decree, actions were taken by the DG CAA, BULATSA and the airport operator Sof Connect AD to notify the international aviation organizations IATA and ICAO, which must publish the new name in the registers.

“Usually such update procedures take between 3 and 6 months, but we expect this to be done in about 3 months. BULATSA also has to update its registers and I have the assurance that this will be done within a month. These deadlines will in no way hinder the normal functioning of the airport, as the change does not concern the operational indicators - IATA and ICAO codes”, said Grozdan Karadzhov. The Deputy Prime Minister added that the current identification codes - IATA's SOF and ICAO's LBSF - will be maintained.
