Minister Grozdan Karadzhov: A railway reform is needed in order to prevent more incidents like the one that happened yesterday

A railway reform is needed, albeit very late, to prevent more incidents like the one that happened yesterday. This is what Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadzhov said when taking over the government from the outgoing minister Krasimira Stoyanova.

He stressed that he has been connected with the sector for years and has a deep knowledge of the processes. ‘This is the second time I have become part of the team of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and some of my best years have been spent there,’ the new minister said.

There are problems in Bulgarian State Railways and National Railway Infrastructure Company, therefore we will seriously work on safety in railway transport, Grozdan Karadzhov added. He said that last year 5 people have lost their lives as a result of railway accidents and in the first days of this year we lost two employees, which is a terrible tragedy.

For her part, the outgoing head of the ministry, Krasimira Stoyanova, pointed out that four months ago she made a commitment to continue all important reforms in the sector and has kept her promise. ‘We have put a lot of effort into preparing a good and competitive procedure for the selection of a railway carrier, improving the condition of Bulgarian Post, and the delivery of new rolling stock under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan,’ she also stated.

Both were adamant that it was important to continue all the reforms started in the sector.
