Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Rossen Jelizkov met with the Director General of DG “Mobility and Transport” and an EC High Level Coordinator for road safety issues Matthew Baldwin. Minister Rossen Jeliazkov presented the package of measures to reduce road traffic accidents that are currently being elaborated in MTITC.
During the meeting were discussed the current legislative amendments related to the division of the Road Traffic Act into three separate acts that shoud establish a clear, precise and uncontradictory regulation of road safety. Among topics that were discussed were also the improvement of drivers’ training, exams' controlling systems and technical worthiness of vehicles.
Minister Rossen Jeliazkov informed Matthew Baldwin on the pending reform concerning the transfer of powers on road traffic control from EA “Road Transport Administration” to the Ministry of Interior. In his words, this will lead to the establishment of a single road safety authority, which will significantly improve effectiveness and will give opportunity of inspectors of EA “Road Transport Administration” to focus their efforts on the activity of the enterprises in the sector.
In the course of the conversation Minister Jeliazkov expressed firmly the position of the Bulgarian state on Mobility Package I. “We consider it important to evade any discriminatory rules and restrictive measures and we will continue to defend the requests of the Bulgarian hauliers and trade unions on the proposed amendments. A balanced policy should be followed and we are open for subsequent discussions to find the right solution”, stated Jeliazkov.
Minitser Rossen Jelizakov will participate in the Road Saftety Conference, which will be held tomorrow, 2 October 2018 at 9:00 a.m. in the National Palace of Culture under the aegis of the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council. During the forum the Director General of DG “Mobility and Transport” Matthew Baldwin will present the EC initiatives in the field of road safety. The event will be opened by the Minister of Interior Mladen Marinov.
