The European Supercomputing Infrastructure will bring the European Union to a leading position. This was announced by the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Rossen Jeliazkov at the Council of Telecommunications Ministers in Luxembourg. Within the session, Commissioner Gabriel announced the eight countries, including Bulgaria, as hosts of European supercomputer centers.
The Bulgarian commissioner said that today is a historic day for Europe, and for Bulgaria this is a decisive step forward as a country with the potential for a regional leader in the field of supercomputers. The investment of the Member States, together with EU funds, amounts to 840 million euro. The Bulgarian commissioner also added that supercomputers are at the heart of European technological leadership and can successfully compete with the US and China.
Minister Rossen Jeliazkov thanked the Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Maria Gabriel for the enormous efforts made in the sector. He stressed that the development of European high-performance computing technologies is now possible through the integrated ecosystem of national resources and the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, which is the legal and funding structure of supercomputer centers.
