A study of the possibility of a global international roaming space between the European Union and the Eastern Partnership countries is underway. The Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Rossen Jeliazkov declared Bulgaria's support for this initiative when participating in the Third Eastern European Ministerial Meeting on Digital Economy. The Forum is held in Bucharest and is attended by European Commission Vice-President Andrus Ansip, European Union Ministers responsible for the Digital Economy, International Financial Institutions, Electronic Communications Regulators, the EU4Digital Consortium, as well as representatives of the private sector.
Minister Jeliazkov reminded that during the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, a first step was taken to integrate the countries of the Western Balkans into the values of the Union. "Thanks to our strong political commitment, we were able to sign memoranda with neighboring countries to cut international roaming tariffs for telecoms services," he said. In his words, these agreements have already produced positive results. "Telecom operators report increasing call count and Internet access usage. Improving access to these services plays an important role in facilitating economic and social synergies, both in terms of trade and travel across countries, "Rossen Jeliazkov said.
Tomorrow he will participate in the Informal Council of EU Telecom Ministers, where he will discuss with his colleagues Europe's digital strategy post-2020 and the creation of a more secure cyber security system.
