We are accelerating the steps towards the actual implementation of the measures identified under the Fast Danube Project. Together with Romania, we will seek European funding to create normal conditions for navigation on the Danube more days a year and with a greater capacity of ships in the next few years. This was stated by the Minister of Transport and Communications Nikolay Sabev during the Christening Ceremony of the newly built shunting ship "Iskar", owned by the Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River. He added that a Bulgarian-Romanian structure is to be set up to apply with a joint project for European funding from the Connecting Europe Facility.
Iskar Ship is the latest component of the Agency's dredging equipment, with which it will now be able to carry out the river's deepening activities on its own. It is expected that, after conducting the necessary training of the crew on the technology of implementation, the first real dredging activities will begin in the summer.
Minister Sabev explained that it is time for Bulgaria to start effectively fulfilling its commitments to maintain the shipping route, which in turn will significantly increase the economic efficiency of the fleets operating on the Danube.
