Prof. Atanas Semov and prof. Stefan Hadjitodorov from BAS again raised the issue of renaming Sofia Airport after Vasil Levski

"This is an extremely important initiative for Bulgaria and I am glad that we meet your support and understanding for it. It is important not only that the front door of the country has a name, but also that it is the name of the most significant and greatest European of Bulgaria - Vasil Levski", said Prof. Levski. Semov at the beginning of the meeting, which took place today at the Ministry of Transport and Communications at the invitation of Minister Krasimira Stoyanova.

In order for a presidential decree to be issued to rename such an object of national importance, a positive opinion from the Ministry of Transport and Communications is required, which should contain a financial framework and specific steps and deadlines to be taken to make the name change a fact. Minister Krasimira Stoyanova said that she welcomes the idea and together with the competent administration and the concessionaire of Sofia Airport will start work on the preparation of the opinion. The meeting was also attended by Jesus Caballero, CEO of SOF Connect, the operator of Sofia Airport.

The idea of renaming the airport has been discussed since 2009, and in 2017 the proposal for the name of the Apostle of Freedom was made by scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and received great support, but it was not implemented. Opinion polls were also conducted, which showed wide approval for the initiative to name the national airport after our most illustrious historical figure.
